DORCHESTER YMCA'S Scorpio display team is gearing up for the Spirit of the Sea Festival.

Team Scorpio, created in October last year, will be performing on Weymouth Beach this Saturday (2pm) and the following Saturday (July 12, 2pm) as part of the festival celebrations.

The group, consisting of rhythmic, artistic girls and artistic boys gymnasts are already used to performing in public, having performed a cops and robbers' display in January with a local dance club - their first time on stage.

And the success of this routine was further recognised when team Scorpio was asked to perform at the Dorset Police open day.

Spokesman Sam Welch said: "Team Scorpio continue to go from strength to strength developing new, more exciting routines and enrolling new gymnasts for the coming year's round of summer fetes.

"In addition, the team, who train for just one and a half hours a week in the YMCA's Sawmills Lane centre, are taking part in the Spirit of the Sea celebrations in Weymouth.

"These events will be run each year in the lead up to the 2012 Olympic events and the team are hoping that they will perhaps be asked to perform at the opening ceremony."

Team Scorpio will be performing on the following dates: Saturday, July 5 (2pm), Spirit of the Sea, Weymouth Beach; Saturday, July 12 (2pm), Spirit of the Sea, Weymouth Beach; Sunday, July 13, Blue Light Open Day, Dorset Police HQ; Saturday, July 19 (2pm), Weldmar Hospicecare Trust Annual Summer Fete.
