WEYMOUTH will welcome back Gerard Benfield for the 2024/25 Vanarama National League South season after the goalkeeper agreed terms with the Terras.

Benfield played the majority of Weymouth’s games last season, chalking up 30 appearances in all competitions.

However, the goalkeeper position was tinkered with on numerous occasions by previous manager Bobby Wilkinson.

He brought in Brighton’s Hugo Fisher and Jared Thompson for short spells before Christmas and also ended the campaign with Bristol City loanee Harvey Wiles-Richards.

But Benfield will remain at the Terras after being given the vote of confidence by new boss Mark Molesley.

In 2023/24, Benfield impressed once more with a string of important saves and bounced back from dislocated fingers sustained in training.

In a club statement, the Terras said: “Benfield will continue on with his career on the south coast as he commits to The Terras for the upcoming season, which will be his fourth with the club.

“Since making his debut in claret and blue on 28th November 2020, Benfield has registered 42 appearances across 3 seasons. Bring with it nine overall clean sheets and some important saves at crucial times.

“A familiar face amongst the fans, Gerard has worked with Mark before briefly and now commits to join the carefully selected squad that is taking shape as we enter the second era of Mark Molesley.”

The former Salisbury and Dorchester Town custodian becomes the seventh player to agree terms with Weymouth this summer.

Leo Hamblin, Charlie Rowan, captain Tom Bearwish, Keelan O’Connell, Josh McQuoid and Brandon Goodship have already committed for 2024/25.
