WEYMOUTH DOONAN WILDCATS 28

WEYMOUTH Doonan Wildcats' team manager Jem Dicken was left baffled by his side's "abysmal" display in last night's 64-28 hammering at the Boston Barracudas.

The Wildcats, who were beaten by the Redcar Cubs on Saturday and the Buxton Hitmen on Sunday, suffered their third away loss in as many days as they were simply out-raced by their hosts.

Only Lee Smart (11+1) scored double figures on a miserable night for the Radipole Lane outfit.

Dicken said: "It was absolutely abysmal. If we ride like that we won't win anything this year, not even if we raced an academy side. It was a very bad end to a not so good three days.

"It's hard to describe what happened to us. Some of the boys were not on the pace and the team spirit seemed to have gone.

"We had a chat halfway through and at the end. The boys said it can't get any worse for us and it won't happen again.

"One of the problems we had was that heads started to drop. Andrew Bargh was brilliant at Redcar but in eight races since he hasn't looked like beating anyone. Karl Mason tried hard and did well to get his six points.

"Lee scored 11+1 but even so he should be beating Boston's top boys. In the end they rode better than we did and they deserved their win while we deserved what we got."

The Wildcats are assured of a place in the end of season Conference League play-offs, as are Boston, but they missed out on an opportunity to stake a strong claim for top spot in the table.

The night started as it meant to go on for Dicken's men, losing the first two heats 5-1.

A 4-2 loss in heat three was as good as it got until race seven, which Weymouth tied 4-4 thanks to a tactical ride from Smart.

Captain Karl Mason and Kyle Newman levelled the next heat 3-3, but Boston maintained their dominance with five straight wins.

The Wildcats managed to record successive 3-3s in the final two races but the demolition was complete. In fact, Weymouth failed to beat Boston in a single heat while Matt Wright was the only Wildcat to cross the line first in any of the 15 races.
