WEYMOUTH Hockey Club's open day took place at Redlands as the town's players got together ahead of the new season.

Up to 40 players from the clubs different squads split into three teams and competed in a mini-tournament with everyone playing four games each.

Club captain and chairman Matt Walkden was delighted with how the day went ahead of the new season, which gets underway in two weeks.

He said: "The open day gave the chance for any new players who joined in close season to get to know the members and compete with their new team.

"We all met up in town later on that night as well for a curry, it was a brilliant day.

The first team's season begins in a fortnight with their first Hampshire League One encounter being a long trip to Haslemere on October 4 and Walkden is impressed with the team that captain Andy Stiles has recruited this term.

He said: "We have been very fortunate to attract some very good players for the new season.

"The first team should improve on last season and after seeing the team Andy has got, they look as good as they have ever done."

Weymouth's Firsts and Seconds continue their pre-season preparations against their Bridport counterparts tomorrow at Redlands (noon).
