WITH a new sponsor and kit Team Waikiki, formerly Riviera B, are determined to make their mark on the third division of the South West Dorset Winter League.

Having held top spot for several weeks, hopes of securing the winner’s trophy and promotion to the second division are running high.

Waikiki’s performance against PJ Aikens this week clearly demonstrated the reason why they are heading the leaderboard.

Waikiki thrashed Aikens by a resounding 41-10. The first quarter saw good structured play by Waikiki, with the defensive unit providing confident back up to assist centre Kerry Hansford and wing attack Emma Gardner, pushing up into their attacking zone to deliver excellent feeds into their shooters.

Waikiki’s shooting partnership of Jemima Mcgrandle and Katy Alcock proved infallible, giving their team a 13-1 lead.

In the second quarter Aikens settled with the comfortable play of mid-court trio Kate Sanderson, Caroline Goode and Emma Kellaway.

Experienced shooter Yvette Roles showed determined confidence in the shooting circle but Vicki Winter and Jo Baldwin in defence for Waikiki denied them several scoring opportunities.

During the third and final quarters fatigue began to show in both teams, with some sloppy play and unforced errors. However, in the end the overpowering court play and ability to link between defence and attack ensured Waikiki’s victory.

Player of the match was given to Aikens’ goal attack Caroline Goode, who at just 13-years-old displayed inspired play well exceeding her age.
