ON-FIELD captain Anton Robinson and striker Stuart Beavon will remain at Weymouth at least until January.

The Terras received offers for both players in the run-up to yesterday’s 5pm deadline for loan deals but Robinson turned down a move in favour of staying at the Wessex Stadium while negotiations broke down concerning Beavon’s expected switch to Coca-Cola League One outfit AFC Bournemouth.

It was feared Weymouth would be forced to undertake a big clearout of players this week in a bid to cut costs but with takeover talks still ongoing it now appears caretaker manager Alan Lewer will have the same resources at his disposal until the New Year.

Chief executive Gary Calder said: “There were a couple of clubs interested in Anton but he does not want to leave Weymouth Football Club and he wants something secure going forwards. He has a good contract here and he wants to wait and see what the situation is in January when the window re-opens.

“As for Stuart, he did hold talks with AFC Bournemouth but in the end negotiations broke down so nobody has left.”

Ex-Terras boss and current Cherries assistant manager Jason Tindall, who brought Beavon to Weymouth, is disappointed the deal broke down and accused his former employers of moving the goalposts.

He added: “He was a target of ours and he is a player we like. I know there were three other clubs also trying to sign him and two of them put in better offers than we did.

“Unfortunately though, Weymouth moved the goalposts on the negotiation side of it and that is why it broke down at 4.30pm. He wanted to come and everything had been agreed for him to come.”

Mansfield Town will be the visitors to the Wessex Stadium in the Blue Square Premier tomorrow and coach Marcus Browning is hoping his men can continue the type of form that saw them win 1-0 at Barrow last Saturday.

He said: “Mansfield are currently 19th but I think that is a bit of a false position. From the reports we have received and what we know, they are a good team that like to get it down and pass it around but we would like to think with home advantage we can go on and win.

“Last Saturday’s performance at Barrow was a real confidence booster. The boys played extremely well and hopefully we can now go on and put a little run together. If we could take four points from our next two games it would put us right up in the mix for the play-offs and that is what we keep reminding the players.”

James Coutts is expected to return to action following a hamstring injury but Beavon is suspended after picking up his fifth booking at Barrow. Browning added: “James has trained this week and of course we will have Santos Gaia and Chris McPhee back available as well from suspension so we are pretty much back to a full squad but it is a very small one.”
