WEYMOUTH Doonan Wildcats’ promoter Phil Bartlett will unveil his new-look team at the club’s annual Press and Practice Day this Saturday, and he is in confident mood that another thrilling season is on the horizon.

The Wildcats landed the Conference League title in 2008 and they will be hoping to finish top of the pile again this year in the newly formed National League, which will provide more competitive meetings throughout the campaign.

With a squad of Jon Armstrong, Lee Smart, Matt Wright, James Cockle, Terry Day, Tim Webster and James White-Williams, few would bet against a repeat of last year’s success.

Bartlett will introduce his line-up to the fans at 5pm in the Wessex Lounge at Weymouth Football Club before the riders will then take to the Wessex Bus Raceway to fine tune their set ups ahead of the Challenge meeting with the Isle of Wight Islanders on April 10.

As part of the proceedings, supporters will also be given the opportunity to have a photo with their favourite riders and gain their autographs.

Bartlett said: “We have two new faces this season in James Cockle and James White-Williams who are both looking forward to getting out on to the Wessex Bus Raceway and, hopefully, helping the Wildcats claim back-to-back league titles.

“In just his second season of racing, James White-Williams has joined the Wildcats from rivals Plymouth.

“He has shown considerable flair at our training schools and looks to be at home on our tight little track. He’s determined to progress this season and will ride at number six.

“James Cockle is a proven performer at Conference League level and beyond. He has performed well at Weymouth previously and was one half of the Boston pairing that took the Conference League Pairs here in 2008.

“The rest of the team are all very well acquainted with the Weymouth circuit and I am sure it is going to prove to be another thrilling season.”

The Good Friday meeting against the Isle of Wight will include free admission for all with gates opening at 5.30pm.

And, as an added incentive, spectators will also receive a ticket that entitles them to half price entry for the following week’s Young Guns Individual meeting, which will consist of most of the National League reserve riders.

* The Southern Classic Speedway Bike Club, in conjunction with Weymouth Doonan Wildcats, will hold an exhibition of speedway bikes this Sunday.

The showcase takes place between 11am and 4pm on Weymouth seafront next to the Jubilee Clock and will feature approximately 15 to 20 bikes.

Those on display will be from the past and present, including JAP, Jawa, Weslake, Godden and GM machines.

Some of the Wildcats’ team will also be present.
