WILDCAT James Cockle believes his new club’s power-packed top three alone will be enough to win most meetings.

The 22-year-old joins Jon Armstrong and Lee Smart in forming the National League’s most lethal-looking spearhead.

All three have no shortage of experience when it comes to bagging the big scores at this level.

And with Matthew Wright and Terry Day in support, Cockle is certain the competition to be number one will be fierce at the Wessex Bus Raceway this year.

He said: “I think our top three will be amazing. We can all easily score 10 points, which will actually win quite a few meetings.

“Matthew Wright is like a third heat leader as well and everyone wants to be the top guy.

“If we’ve all got that attitude, we’re going to win.”

While this will be Cockle’s debut season in Wildcats colours, he is no stranger to the Wessex Bus Raceway.

He won the Conference League Best Pairs there last May along with partner Simon Lambert while wearing Boston colours.

So the former Glasgow man is keen for plenty of repeat performances.

Cockle added: “It’s good to be here and I’m looking forward to it.

“It was a great night for me when I won the Pairs last year – hopefully it will be the Weymouth side doing it this season.

“The track is a bit different to Boston’s old one, which was quite big.

“I’ve always done ok here at Weymouth and even if I didn’t like it, it’s time to get used to it.”

Cockle’s time with the Barracudas came to an end last August following a dispute with the club’s management over riding opportunities after they signed Australian Darcy Ward.

This meant he missed their Conference play-off final against the Wildcats, who hammered them 113-68 on aggregate.

Instead Cockle finished the campaign with Redcar, but he believes Weymouth may not have ended their 54-year wait for a league title had he been in the Barracudas side.

He said: “If I had been in the final, it could have been different and I may have scored the same points I did in the Pairs at Weymouth.

“But Boston lost and what happened has happened – it’s a new season now, I’m here at Weymouth and that’s all that matters.

“There was a bit of a dispute over who wanted to ride and who wanted to miss meetings.

“I do speedway because I enjoy it and want to ride every week.

“I don’t want to be told when I can ride and when I can’t, but we shouldn’t have that problem this year.”
