Dorchester YMCA gymnasts delivered five medals at the Women’s Artistic Dorset Floor & Vault competition.

First to compete for the YMCA were Willow Jehu (Phase 1 Club, 02), Elizabeth Legg (Phase 1 Club, 01), Emma Adams (Phase 2 NDP, 00), Caitlin Chapman and Holly O’Flanagan (both Phase 2 NDP, 99+).

Jehu and Adams both began their competition on the floor, while Legg, Chapman and O’Flanagan started on vault.

The floor competitors performed excellently with Jehu finishing in third and Adams placing top in her group. Things were also going well on the vault.

Legg completed a handstand-flat back vault and was sitting in fifth while there was nothing to separate O’Flanagan and Chapman, who finished joint third after performing a handspring vault over the table.

After switching apparatus, Legg and Chapman finished third in their groups with O’Flanagan claiming first on the floor by a margin of 0.5.

Jehu, completing her vault for the first time, placed fifth while Adams put in another strong performance to earn second.

This all meant that Legg, Jehu and Chapman just missed out on overall medals. However, O’Flanagan took home a bronze medal with Adams striking gold.

The second round saw only two gymnasts from the county town club take part with Amy Lillington (Phase 1 Club, 99) and Danielle Brunell (Phase 1 Club, 00) representing the YMCA. Brunell started her competition on the floor and put in a brilliant performance to finish second.

Lillington matched that result on the vault before an assured performance on the floor saw her gain first place.

Brunell achieved top spot on the vault as both girls bagged gold medals overall.

The final two YMCA gymnasts of the day were Orla Adams (Phase 1 NDP, 00/01) and Ella Allford (Phase 1 NDP 98/99).

The former was unfortunate to finish just outside the top three following an excellent floor routine but made up for that when placing third on the vault. However, she missed the overall bronze and silver by a mere 0.01 and 0.03 respectively.

Allford meanwhile, was second on both the floor and vault to secure a deserved silver medal.

Coaching team manager Julie O’Brien said: “We are very pleased with how the event has gone. All of our girls placed on at least one piece, which is excellent.

“All the other coaches and judges have commented on how well our girls performed, and how tidy their skills are. That shows we must be doing something right.”
