THE final of Weysports’ first community event has been deemed “a fantastic success” by organiser Tim Davis.

More than 50 children represented districts from across the Weymouth & Portland borough in the final stages of the free event, picking Premier League team names for each area.

Tottenham Hotspur (Westham), Manchester United (Wyke Regis), Arsenal (Littlemoor), Chelsea (Radipole) and an all girls team, who played as Aston Villa, took part in the competition, with the Villa girls coming out on top.

Davis said: “The event was a fantastic success and both the standard of play and behaviour of the children was superb.

“Plans are already well underway for the next Fun in the Sun event during the summer holidays and we will be looking to double the number of teams on finals day.

“Weysports would like to thank the sponsors and Julie Hursthouse from Weymouth & Portland Borough Council for their assistance.”

Arsenal were the early pacesetters in the tournament, closely followed by Tottenham and Manchester United, while Chelsea and the Aston Villa girls were finding the going tough.

But the girls, who had lost their first two matches, then beat Tottenham and United to eliminate Chelsea and reach the semi-finals.

Spurs then beat Arsenal thanks to a Jacob Coombs goal while the girls saw off Manchester United in a penalty shootout in the other.

The final ended goalless and Villa triumphed in another shootout, 5-4 on spot-kicks. Thanks to support from partners in the project, including Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, Knightstone Housing, Weymouth & Portland Housing and Dorset Police, the event was totally free for all children.
