JAMIE McGuinness has not ruled out a return to Weymouth after scoring the Terras’ winning goal in the last home match of his loan spell, against Hampton & Richmond on Saturday.

The 19-year-old Rushden & Diamonds player is out of contract with his parent club this summer but will have to wait until their involvement in the Blue Square Premier play-offs is over before discussing a possible new deal.

He still has one match left as a Weymouth player – away to Woking on Saturday (3pm) – and was ecstatic after netting the first Blue Square League goal of his career.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything more,” he said. “I don’t score many but it was a good ball in and it was nice to give the fans something to go home with.

“They keep turning up and I think it was about time we got something from a game because we’ve been playing well and the luck maybe hasn’t gone our way but on Saturday I think we were comfortable.

“Michael Neish made a great save at the end but I felt we could have won the game by a few more. For me personally it was a great game and with it being the last home game at Weymouth for me it was nice to score a goal and win the sponsor’s man-of-the-match award.”

McGuinness, who has been back training with his parent club in recent weeks, will return to Rushden permanently once his loan deal expires, but still has to sit down with manager Justin Edinburgh to try and win a new contract.

The versatile right-sided player said: “Obviously for myself I would like to play as high as possible but since I joined Weymouth on loan I have taken a real liking to the club and it would definitely be an option if I don’t get a new contract.

“With Ian Hutchinson coming back it would be fantastic. He brought me here in the first place and the main reason I extended my loan until the end of the season was because I thought he would be here until then.

“He’s been a great manager to work under and I hope to work under him again but it depends what happens with regards to Rushden.

“Also, living in Watford, it is a long journey to Weymouth so it would also have to depend on what anyone could offer.

“You should never say never in football and I have loved my time at Weymouth.”

McGuinness missed the 0-0 draw with Thurrock through illness but has played every minute of every match other than that against Thurrock since arriving on loan from Rushden back in November, meaning only Scott Brice, Simon Radcliffe and Martin Slocombe have played more minutes than him this season.

McGuinness’ first match was the 1-0 victory at Bishop’s Stortford – the Terras’ best away display of the season – and he hopes to end his loan spell with Weymouth’s second win on the road this season.

“It will be a tough game away to Woking,” he said. “They need three points to have a chance of getting in the play-offs but we need to win so we don’t finish bottom.

“When we played them earlier in the season we kept them to 0-0 and had chances to win that game. I feel we can go there and get a result if we show the same effort, determination and desire we have done recently.”
