WEYMOUTH captain Paul Payne admitted it was a tough decision not to call up second team centurion Kieron Womble for tomorrow’s Dor-set Premier League clash with Broadstone at Redlands (12.45pm).

Womble hit an impressive 125 during the seconds’ Dorset League Division One defeat to Sherborne last week but the skipper opted to go with the returning Ben Lawes instead.

The Seasiders’ batsman Lawes, who is yet to have been dismissed this season, can only play fleetingly due to other commitments but Payne insisted Womble’s chance is likely to come in the near future “It’s always nice when people are doing well in the seconds,” he said. “It was a tough selection this week but we’ve gone with Ben Lawes. It would be silly not use Ben because he is a class player.

“Kieron had a great knock last week but he needs to put a few together to increase the pressure – I’m sure his time will come sooner rather than later.”

Lawes is back in the team for Andy Bray, who will feature for the seconds despite struggling with a hamstring injury, while Australian Laurie Whyte has been handed a recall in place of the unavailable Michael Pearce.

And with quality players ready to step in when others are unavailable, Payne insisted everyone needs to perform consistently.

He said: “We are starting to get players back and a few injured players are also coming back in the next few weeks so there is pressure on everybody to perform and there are a lot of great youngsters coming through as well.

“We’ve got a good team this week so we are very confident. We have three frontline seamers and four spinners as well as a nice long batting line-up.”

And with three tricky away trips – at Stalbridge, Parley and Poole – to follow tomorrow’s home match with Broadstone, Payne realises it is important to set off on those journeys with a home win fresh in their minds “You want to win every week but it would be nice to get a home win under our belts before three away trips,” said the skipper. “But we won’t approach it any differently to any other game and we’ll be looking to bounce back from last week’s defeat.”

n Weymouth Seconds travel to Meyrick Park to face fellow newly-promoted side Winton in Dorset League Division One tomorrow (noon).

Sixteen-year-old prospect Joe Weld, of Bryanston School, will make his debut after being recommended to skipper John Ryan by Ben Lawes.

Ryan said: “I’ve heard good things about him and we like to give the young players a chance so he will come in and be able to show us what he’s made of.”
