LUKE Chessell will remain a Weymouth Weyline Wildcat for the rest of the season if he continues to impress in the reserve slot during Danny Stoneman’s absence.

Scunthorpe asset Chessell will stay with Weymouth for as long as they want him, which could be until the end of the season under the terms of his loan deal.

The 20-year-old scored 14 points for the Cats at his parent team’s track in the 52-38 National League reversal to the Scunthorpe Saints on Sunday and will make his home debut when the Dudley Heathens visit the Wessex Raceway on Friday night (7.15pm).

“He can gate and he can ride and that’s the sort of firepower down the order that we needed,” said Cats’ chairman Phil Bartlett. “Luke has signed on a full loan so he’s at Weymouth for as long as we want him.

“He’s fantastic – a great kid and a great rider. It’s just what we needed in the team at this time.

“We have three reserves who can score points now so they are all going to be fighting for their place in the team.”

And although Chessell is yet to experience a meeting at the Wessex Raceway, Bartlett expects his quick starts to make him a real danger there.

“He’s very fast out of the gate so he should be able to control it from there,” he said.

Chessell was signed to replace Stoneman when the teenager broke his index finger while unloading his bikes from his van.

Bartlett has also revealed that plans to replace Terry Day have hit the buffers because of a lack of riders available to sign.

“I’m astute enough to get someone picked up but I can’t pick up what is not there,” said the Cats’ chairman. “It’s not just Weymouth having problems, the Isle of Wight can’t pick up anyone and they have 10 points to play with.”
