ASHLEY Vickers labelled his Dorch-ester Town side “Jekyll and Hyde” after last night’s 4-4 draw with lower-league Bashley.

The Magpies raced into a 3-0 lead at the break with Ryan Moss, Jake Smeeton and Nick Crittenden on target.

However, the Blue Square Bet South visitors let their guard down in the second period, allowing the Zamaretto Premier Division hosts to overturn the deficit.

Gary Middleton, Tom Hill, Ian Oliver and Dominic Allen all found the net as Dorchester collapsed.

There was to be one final twist though, as second-half substitute Jamie Gleeson bagged a last-gasp equaliser to spare the county town outfit’s blushes.

Understandably, boss Vickers was far from impressed with the Magpies’ second-half showing, He said: “We were truly outstanding in the first half yet we were truly poor in the second. It was like Jekyll and Hyde.

“In the first half we chased the ball down, we picked up the seconds, we got the ball to Critts – who was a real plus point for us – while Mossy and Matt Groves combined well up front.

“But the lads clearly felt they had done the job at half-time as we went on to concede four sloppy goals and were fortunate to get a draw late on.

“It was the manner of the draw that disappointed me most. You just can’t afford to take your foot off the gas.

“I know it’s a pre-season friendly but we have to be nastier and able to finish teams off.

“I played a lot of the regular first-team players because I wanted them to get Saturday’s defeat to Bournemouth out of their system.

“Charlie Knight was the only trialist who played and I thought he did well. I didn’t think it was fair to put the other trialists on when we were playing so poorly. I didn’t want to haul people off and let them get away with it.”

One trialist who looks to have failed in his attempts to earn a contract at the Avenue Stadium is striker Saul Otobo.

Vickers added: “We won’t be taking him on, mainly because his wage demands are too high.”

The Magpies complete their pre-season programme at rivals Weymouth this Saturday (3pm).

Meanwhile, Dorchester’s Steve Devlin, currently on trial at Dagen-ham & Redbridge, was handed 76 minutes in Monday night’s 3-1 win at Billericay and is expected to feature in this evening’s behind-closed-doors clash with Premier League West Ham.

Vickers said: “He did well in training and I believe he gave a good account of himself in the game against Billericay. He is enjoying the experience and I’m sure it’s been a real eye-opener.

“He comes back tomorrow but we’ll wait and see as to whether he trains because he should be playing against West Ham tonight.”

Magpies (starting line-up): Evans, Nodwell, Critchell, Frampton, Smeeton, Coutts, Crittenden, Knight, Moss, Groves, Allen.
