SUPER-SUB Sam Charles forced home a last-gasp winner as the Terras progressed into the second qualifying round of the FA Trophy at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

The talented striker came on with three minutes to go and displayed his predatory instincts by tucking the ball home from close range deep into added-time to send the home fans into raptures.

That strike wrapped up a cut-and-thrust second half, which saw Bashley take the lead on the hour through ex-Dorchester Town defender Gary Middleton.

Warren Byerley then headed home his seventh of the season for the Terras just two minutes later before Dominic Allen struck a post for the visitors.

The tie then appeared to fizzle out in the closing stages but just when everyone thought a replay was on the cards, the hosts got the late goal their overall dominance just about deserved to secure back-to-back victories for the first time this season.

Weymouth boss Ian Hutchinson kept faith with the same XI that began the 1-0 victory over Ciren-cester Town the previous week, with John Litherland retaining his place in the centre of midfield alongside Rob Wolleaston.

Meanwhile, on the bench, Lewis Whyton replaced Lewis Ironside, following some impressive displays at the back for the club’s second-string.

As for the Bash, they included three new signings in their starting line-up with ex-Dorchester Town duo Ryan Hill and Dave Allen making welcome returns to the club, and former AFC Totton forward Mike Spinney being handed a debut up front.

Another new boy and ex-Magpie, Dave Town, began on the bench along with former Weymouth keeper Joe Prodomo.

The hosts made a confident start by testing David Elm in the opening minute. Richard Groves picked out Ben Gerring with a cross from the right but the centre-back’s tame header flew comfortably into the visiting keeper’s hands.

Moments later, Wolleaston was then cynically pulled back on the edge of the box, only for Groves to send the resulting free-kick harmlessly wide of the target.

The visitors were looking nervy and on nine minutes a poor clearance from Hill fell to on-loan striker Matthew Wright on the right-hand side of the box. He cut the ball back across goal to Matteo King but the winger snatched at the chance by sending his shot on the turn high over the crossbar.

Bashley looked lacklustre and disjointed but despite some neat interplay Weymouth were lacking that all-important cutting edge in the final third to take full advantage.

In fact it took a poor piece of officiating to enable the away side to carve out their first opening, which came on 34 minutes when referee Andy Sainsbury failed to stop the game following a facial injury to Gerring.

With Weymouth clearly out of position, Bashley broke with Dominic Allen getting down the left and firing in a low cross that somehow evaded everyone in the box, including Spinney, who just failed to get a touch at the far post.

Weymouth ended the half with some more bright interplay around the visitors’ box but once again their poor delivery from good crossing situations let them down.

After the break, the atmosphere in the stadium began to peter out but on 52 minutes it was slightly lifted again when Byerley cut inside his marker and went to pull the trigger, only to see Groves nick the ball off his toe and take on a shot himself.

The ex-Oxford United star’s effort was weak and should have easily been gathered by ex-Magpie Elm but somehow the burly keeper made a mess of it and was a relieved man when his fumble trickled just wide of the near post.

As a spectacle the game desperately needed a goal and it finally arrived on the hour when Middle-ton tapped in from six yards following a fine long-range effort from Knowles, which cannoned back off the underside of the crossbar.

A fortnight ago, Weymouth may have hung their heads after such a sucker punch but just two minutes later they were level again when Groves produced an inch-perfect cross, which Byerley turned home with a stooping header from eight yards.

Suddenly the game had come alive with both sides going all out for the victory. But it was the Bash that should have forged ahead again on 64 minutes when Dominic Allen struck a post when he really should have scored.

The Terras were then forced to ride out a sustained period of Bashley pressure before Wright teed up Groves on 77 minutes, only for the midfielder’s strike from the edge of the area to fly just past the left upright.

In the final stages, the game tightened up again and looked to be heading for a draw until the third minute of added-time when Elm failed to gather a low ball into the near post by Wright, allowing Charles to force home a dramatic late winner.
