ASHLEY Vickers is “hopeful” there will be no more departures at the Avenue Stadium after seeing his side gain a crucial victory at fellow strugglers Lewes on Saturday.

The Magpies were forced to release Ryan Hill and Stuart Douglas last week, as well as sell Dave Allen back to former club Bashley, in the wake of their FA Cup exit.

But Vickers is confident the cost-cutting measure is now at an end.

Asked if he had lowered the wage bill to the required amount, the county town chief replied: “Pretty much. Hopefully we won’t have to lose anyone else now.

“The squad is looking a bit threadbare at the moment but it’s still a good squad and we had a strong line-up at Lewes on Saturday.

“The events of the last week have brought the boys even closer.”

Loanees Giuseppe Sole and Danny Ings both found the net in Sussex as Dorchester hauled themselves out of the Blue Square Bet South drop-zone for the first time in almost nine weeks.

Sole won and dispatched a first-half penalty while Ings came off the bench to score late on and settle any visiting nerves.

Vickers added: “Giuseppe has got something different, which is probably why he is with Newport in the top tier of non-League football.

“He can drift in and out of games sometimes but he has something special, there’s no question about that.

“Hopefully we will see more of that while he’s here. He is getting fitter and fitter with each game and that bodes well.

“We left Danny on the bench as we went with the players and formation that we know best. Danny though has been fantastic since coming here and he was great when he came on.”

Meanwhile, the Magpies have recalled Harry Nodwell from his loan spell at Barnstaple and the versatile 20-year-old was included in Saturday’s match-day squad.

Vickers said: “We’ve recalled Harry and he will be a good player for the future. This is an opportunity for him to be knocking on the door for a starting place.”
