A SHANE Sheridan double helped Chickerell United overcome Poole Borough 3-1 at Weymouth College.

The Chickens were made to do it the hard way though, as Jamie Holland handed the visitors a half-time advantage.

The hosts were a different proposition in the second period and equalised through Sheridan before the United frontman put them in front for the first time.

Craig Roper made sure of the points late on and manager Chris Wilson, who claimed to be “over the moon” following the result, was full of praise for his charges.

He said: “We gave away a sloppy goal and I felt we didn’t really deserve to be a goal down. We were playing against a strong wind in the first half, which I hadn’t taken into consideration, and that’s maybe why we found it difficult to get out at times.

“However, I didn’t think they deserved to be 1-0 up. They were though and I told the lads at half-time that we needed to keep believing, pass the ball a bit quicker and get it wider.

“To be fair to them, I thought they were tremendous in the second half and thoroughly deserved the three points.

“Recently when we have conceded a goal we’ve then conceded another soon after. That didn’t happen this time and we gave ourselves something to go at in the second half.

“We knew we could get back into it and we showed good character, especially with so many players out.”

Reflecting on Sheridan’s contribution, Wilson, whose side now sit 11th, added: “His movement was good and he was well worth his two goals.”

Chickerell could have taken a first-minute lead on Saturday but Rob Hunter was denied at the far post.

Borough forward Holland scuffed an opportunity to draw first blood before Sheridan shot wide after bursting into the Poole box.

United then fell behind in the 24th minute when a low corner wasn’t dealt with and Holland took full advantage of the home side’s hesitancy.

The same man squandered two good chances to extend the lead – the second of which brought a decent save from Ian Bickerstaff – and those misses proved costly as Chickerell drew level just past the hour.

A lucky ricochet fell kindly for Josh Why and he squared for strike partner Sheridan to tuck home.

Why almost notched two minutes later but the second eventually arrived 13 minutes from time when Sheridan held his nerve to poke past the advancing keeper.

The ex-Easton United man skied his chance of netting a hat-trick but Roper was on hand to calmly convert goal number three.
