ONE of Weymouth’s long-est-running and most popular road races will once again be under starter’s orders this Saturday.

More than 200 fighting-fit athletes from numerous clubs throughout the region have signed up to compete in the Weymouth 10, which will start and finish on the Esplanade.

It promises to be an engaging spectacle for onlookers when it gets underway at 10.30am, as the runners trace the course to Overcombe Corner.

They will then complete two laps of a circuit around Preston before heading back along the Esplanade and finally crossing the finishing line at Weymouth Pavilion, adjacent to Alexandra Gardens.

Weymouth & Portland Mayor Paul Kimber is to attend the prize-giving ceremony and presentations in the pavilion’s Ocean Room.

And Steve Davies, of Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, said: “Sports events are a very important part of the resort’s events programme, promoting good health and bringing together the unique combination of competitive spirit, excitement and anticipation. “This is one of Weymouth’s most established annual sports events and is a great inspiration for local people of all ages and abilities. Come along and cheer your local favourite.”

The inaugural Weymouth 10 was staged back in 1961 and the event moved to the Esplanade 35 years later. It is open to anyone aged 16 and over, and all those who finish will receive a memento.

Entry forms can be obtained from the Weymouth Pavilion, Weymouth Squash and Fitness Centre or via Egdon Heath Harriers’ website, egdonheathharriers.com and runnersworld.co.uk/events/entry Cost of participating ranges from £8 for an affiliated club member, £10 for those non-affiliated or who enter on the day, while there is a £1 discount for those who took part last year.

The event is nearing race capacity so prospective competitors must book now to avoid disappointment. Egdon Heath Harriers will also be providing first-aid cover.

Next year will be the 50th anniversary of the Weymouth 10 and it is hoped an Olympic athlete will launch the race and present prizes, and that the field will be increased to 500 runners.

Competitors who enter this year and next year will get preferential treatment and reduced entry to the golden anniversary celebratory race.

Meanwhile, a four-mile fun run from the pavilion to Overcombe Corner and back is also scheduled to take place on Saturday.

Organiser Michael Wilkinson added: “We are trying to get youn-ger and perhaps some less active older participants for the four-mile run.

“You can take it seriously or take a pleasant stroll along the Esplanade; it’s up to you. Just come along and take part.”

Registration for the fun run will be at the pavilion, ready for a 10.40am start.
