WEYMOUTH chairman George Rolls has clarified the financial state of the club in a bid to calm fears surrounding the notes he submitted in last Saturday’s match-day programme.

The controversial article, which has caused a stir amongst the Terras’ faithful, claimed the Zamaretto Premier Division outfit is losing £5,000 a month, “which is being supported by the board of directors” but it appears that is not the case – not yet anyway.

In a frank admission to Echosport, Rolls admitted the article may not have been “worded well” but he also insisted that the fear of incurring such debt is still a big possibility.

He said: “Questions have been raised about budgeting for 350 people on a matchday, and I hold my hands up when I say that I failed to take into account concessions.

“The budget was worked out on a ratio of paying customers and unfortunately the percentage of concessions and children at Weymouth is huge, with 60 per cent of the crowd at Saturday’s game falling into those two categories.

“It is because of that, why we are up in terms of crowds but down in terms of income on what we budgeted for.

“Commercially we are not doing as well as we were and perhaps that was not worded well in the programme.

“We have not been losing £5,000 every month but at this present time we will lose around £5,000 a month if our commercial and revenue streams do not increase.”

Rolls is hoping an injection of revenue will come off the back of the club’s improved form on the pitch, which has seen Ian Hutchinson’s men record successive victories, following a run of five straight league defeats.

He added: “The turna-round in the last two games has been fantastic.

“At Windsor & Eton, we got totally outplayed and a lot of the players looked like they did not want to be there but since then we have won two on the spin and hopefully tomorrow night at home against Tiverton Town we can finally get into positive points.

“With Tiverton being fairly close, hopefully, it will also encourage more people down to the Bob Lucas Stadium to get behind the lads.”

The Terras pulled in a crowd of just 363 for last Saturday’s FA Trophy victory over Bashley and Rolls is hoping that will rise to at least 500 tomorrow night.

He said: “When we did the free entry against Braintree Town in Feb-ruary, 1,222 turned up but where are they now?

“Only one per cent of the population of Wey-mouth are currently turning up and watching the football team and that is my only frust-ration at the moment because I want to see the fans turn out for us.

“If they do start turning out in their numbers, the budget will increase and we will have more of a fighting chance of staying up, so all I can do is encourage more people to come down and see for themselves how things have improved.

“Everyone is working hard and behind the scenes there are a lot of people coming in on a voluntary basis that really want to help the club.

“There might be a few people that do not want me there, but tough, because I am staying and they have got a better club for it.”
