CHICHESTER 2

WEYMOUTH 5

INSPIRED Patrick May bagged a four-goal haul as Weymouth maintained their position at the summit of Hampshire League Division Three.

The Seasiders overturned Chich-ester for their sixth straight win to ensure they remained ahead of Romsey on goal difference, as the top two maintained their 100 per cent records.

May rattled the woodwork twice in the opening stages as Weymouth began the stronger side and looked to pressurise the struggling hosts.

But Chichester countered and against the run of play they struck the opener, with a fine piece of teamwork resulting in a crafty shot under Matt Dukes in the visitors’ goal.

Weymouth did not let their heads drop though, and restored parity shortly afterwards when a shot from May cannoned back off a post for Andy Styles to bundle the rebound over the line.

Thereafter the seasiders never looked back, duly taking the lead through May, who put the finishing touch to a fine move involving Sam Drewitt and Joe Foot.

Deadly duo May and Foot combined for Weymouth’s third goal as the former, unmarked in the D, found a top corner with a reverse stick.

And May completed his hat-trick against a demoralised Chichester outfit when he converted a short corner with a drag flick, as the visitors ended the first half 4-1 in front.

Weymouth seemed happy to rest on their three-goal cushion in the second period but they were stung into action again once the home side reduced the deficit.

And May rounded off the scoring with his fourth goal of the match – and 21st this season – when he showed great commitment to dive in at the keeper’s pads and scramble the ball home.

In a very physical encounter a number of players stood out for Weymouth, but on top of the tree was youngster Luke Drewitt, who looked confident in possession.

Weymouth will hope to protect their unblemished record when they entertain eighth-placed Alton at Redlands this Saturday.
