WEYMOUTH RESERVES 4

HAMWORTHY UNITED RESERVES 2

MITCH Conning made a dream start to his Weymouth career, scoring one and setting up another in the reserve team’s 4-2 victory over their Hamworthy United counterparts.

The talented winger, signed from Yeovil Town, teed up Sam Charles for the opener and saw Jamie Beasley and substitute Warren White both score before firing home on his debut.

The unbeaten Terras failed to hit top gear in an eventful clash, which saw boss Brendon King sent to the stands for apparent dissent, but remain top of the Magna Dorset Premier League table.

On the topic of Conning, King said: “He’s quick, he can score goals and did really well, especially as he hasn’t played for about 10 weeks. He’s only going to get better and better.

“Joe Charles also made his debut and he did well.”

When asked about referee Brian Parsons’ decision to dismiss him from the home dugout, King added: “Apparently I shouted something at him from 60 yards yet the linesman, who was stood right near me, didn’t hear any swearing.

“I certainly didn’t swear at him, I was just trying to get our physio on to treat Ben Reiffer, but the ref wasn’t interested.

“He was perhaps more interested in trying to make a name for himself by asking me to go to the stands.

“Later in the game our centre forward went round the keeper, who then brings him down, the ref blew for a foul but didn’t produce a card.

“Why wasn’t the keeper red-carded as he was the last man? I don’t want to see players sent off but I don’t make the rules.”

Reflecting on the match as a whole, the reserve-team manager said: “We started brightly and scored a good goal but we stopped doing what was asked.

“We weren’t as good as the standards we have set and to be honest we could have scored a lot more.

“However, it’s just a lack of game time for some of the boys.”

The reserves made a confident start at the Bob Lucas Stadium, going ahead inside six minutes.

Debutant Conning ran 60 yards unopposed before cutting back for Sam Charles to slot home.

The game turned somewhat scrappy but the Terras continued to fashion a number of chances – all of which they failed to take.

Weymouth finally doubled their advantage eight minutes into the second half courtesy of Beasley.

The tall frontman set Alex Halloran free before bravely getting on the end of the midfielder’s low cross.

In his bid to reach the centre, Beasley clashed with Hammers’ keeper Sean Lillington and his momentum took him straight into the advertising boards behind the goal. The striker eventually got to his feet but limped off soon after.

Home gloveman Ashley Weeks almost handed the visitors a lifeline when his weak header fell kindly for Jack Foster. However, the latter’s tame strike was deflected wide by the retreating Eddy Mitchell.

Sam Charles then shot straight at Lillington after Joe Charles’ header was blocked on the goal-line.

United managed to cut the deficit in half with 21 minutes remaining, Jack Satterley slotting through the legs of Weeks.

But back came the Terras and, following King’s sending off, White made it 3-1.

Just two minutes later, the hosts extended their lead further with Conning playing a neat one-two with White before blasting into the bottom-right corner.

After Scott Parker headed a late consolation for Hamworthy, Sam Charles had one last opportunity to complete the scoring.

But having got the better of Lillington, the ball got caught in his feet and the chance went begging.
