Portland ABC enjoyed a clean sweep of victories at their annual pre-Christmas show.

It was the first time the island outfit had held an event at the South Portland Conservative Club but the venue proved to be a lucky one as the host club recorded four victories from four.

The only hiccup came courtesy of the recent snow as the scheduled match between a Dorset select and Surrey select had to be cancelled due to the adverse weather.

However, the show went on and first in the ring for Portland, who were kitted out in a new strip sponsored by Portland Stone Ltd, was young Kane Hamilton, who took part in a skills bout against Tom Upshall from Sturminster Newton.

Hamilton has come through the Kid Gloves section of the club and his years in this clearly showed with the islander going through the full array of skills to wow the crowd.

Next up for the hosts was Taylor Wakefield, facing a rematch with Ocean Harrison of Launceston.

Their first encounter was a close affair with the latter winning by a slim majority. This time around it was the former who came out on top.

Both boxers gave it their all but a late flurry in the final round was enough to see Wakefield triumph.

Stable-mate Luke Alder was also up against familiar opposition in the form of Taunton’s Connor Ackland.

Alder won the previous meeting between the two and there was to be no revenge for Ackland as the Portland member produced a solid performance to win on points.

Club captain Ryan Thomas was next on the bill, going toe-to-toe with a worthy rival in Gary Coles from Kingswood, near Bristol.

Having struggled to find opponents this year, this was Thomas’ first bout of the season.

But right from the first bell the islander moved around the ring with ease and, being the taller boxer, waited for Coles to make his move.

Not long in to the opening round, Coles went for Thomas’ body only to be met with a powerful right hand, which saw the former crash to the canvas.

The Kingswood member valiantly returned to his feet but the referee had no choice but to stop the bout in Thomas’ favour.

Portland’s final competitor was Ryan’s older brother Arran, who was paired with Bryce Goodridge of Basingstoke after his original opponent was forced to pull out with flu.

Arran Thomas certainly had his work cut out against the taller Goodbridge but a fine display resulted in a points victory for the home boxer.

Reflecting on the night’s action, club secretary Vince Ealson said: “It was a great evening with the conservative club perfect hosts, giving the spectators an excellent meal and great service.

“I want to thank all the clubs that came, especially those that had a long distance to travel in harsh weather.

“We will be looking to hold another dinner show at the same venue next year in either May or June.”
