AROUND 120 pupils took part in a Year Six Netball Festival at Wey Valley School & Sports College.

The youngsters, from St Andrew’s, Bincombe Valley and Radipole Primary, were led around five skills stations where they honed their attacking and defensive skills under the supervision of Year 10 Wey Valley sports leaders before taking to the court for a round-robin tournament.

Each of the High Five Netball squads were allocated a country to represent in their games and were briefed by the Wey Valley Olympic young ambassadors on living by the seven Olympic and Paralympic values.

They were also told to focus on determination throughout the festival and, despite the cold weather and strong winds, they did not disappoint.

The Year 10 sports leaders have been training for their Young Netball Organisers Award during their PE lessons and following the festival have now successfully completed the course.

They demonstrated excellent leadership skills throughout the day and encouraged Year Six pupils to achieve their best while having fun taking part in High Five Netball.

The festival was organised by Tanya Howlett (Wey Valley School sport co-ordinator) and Marie Claridge (sports leader teacher) as part of the work undertaken by the West Dorset School Sports Partnership.

Howlett said: “A big thank you goes to Kelly Browne (South West Dorset junior netball coach) for all her support throughout the day.”
