WEYMOUTH St Paul’s Harriers toasted another superb season at their annual general meeting and awards presentation.

The evening was attended by both junior and senior athletes, many of whom received awards for their contribution, effort and achievement over the past year.

Retiring club president Norman White opened with a brief overview on the challenges to athletics in the area, as well as the year’s notable achievements.

Perhaps most impressive is the fact the club has a total of five athletes ranked in the top 10 for their age groups.

Jake Guildford is ninth in under-15 boys’ shot put, Benedict Westhenry is third in the under-17 men 5,000m and fourth in the 1,500m steeplechase, while Kevin Archer is ranked second in the 800m indoor, third in the 800m outdoor, fourth for the 1,500m outdoor, sixth in the indoor equivalent and eighth in the 3,000m for veteran 55+ men.

Elsewhere, Anthony Faulkner is ninth in the hammer for veteran 60+, with Pete Clark the nation’s best in veteran 65+ tetradecathlon – 14 events over two days.

Meanwhile, three athletes broke club records – Ruby Ellis in the under-11 girls’ vortex throw (24.91m), Guildford in the under-15 boys’ shot (14.11m), discus (32.15m) and Javelin (38.50m), and Westhenry in the under-17 men’s 800m (2mins), 1,500m (4.04mins), 3,000m (8.52mins) and 1,500m steeplechase (4.23mins).

All three received certificates for their achievements, along with Archer for winning the national veterans’ 800m title.

New president Tony Faulkner and chairman Caroline Stevenson introduced the award winners, who rec-eived their awards from Weymouth & Portland mayor Paul Kimber.

The TG Copp Cup, presented by Brian Copp, was won by Westhenry for the fourth year in a row.

The club still needs volunteers to help in all aspects, including coaching.

Anyone interested can email info@wsphandac.co.uk with the club happy to organise any required training.
