HAMWORTHY REC 1 WEYMOUTH RESERVES 0 MARK Carter conceded defeat in the Magna Dorset Premier League title race after losing out to leaders Hamworthy Recreation – but insists the Terras still have plenty to play for.

One goal was enough to settle this top-of-the-table encounter at Magna Road and it went to the reigning champions, who have extended their lead at the summit to 11 points.

Carter admits the gap is now too great, but with a League Cup final clash on the horizon, the reserve-team manager is keen to end the season on a high.

He said: “They are 11 points clear now and although we have a game in hand I can’t see them slipping up.

“We’ve still got a cup final to look forward to and Saturday’s result doesn’t mean we will give up as we still want to finish as runners-up.

“We also want to maintain good habits ahead of the cup final.”

Carter was pleased with his side’s work-rate at the weekend but conceded they lacked a cutting edge.

He added: “Personally I felt a draw would have been a fair result as in the second half we attacked them non-stop.

“We just couldn’t produce that final touch or final pass.

“The closest we came was when Lewis Whyton rolled his man but their keeper pulled off a hell of a save.

“Ashley Weeks didn’t have a lot to do in our goal but they took their chance when it came.

“I’m disappointed as we didn’t deserve to lose but they are a great side and they don’t let people play.

“Even when we put them under constant pressure their defence stood up well.

“It was a great team effort from ourselves though and I thought Joe Charles marshalled the defence superbly.

“We lost Warren White to an ankle injury in the first half so I moved Lewis up front and brought Steve Walker on in defence.

“He and Joe were fantastic at the back and their two strikers didn’t get a sniff. They’re both young lads and it bodes well for the future.”
