ASHLEY Vickers has called for greater communication between his Magpies in the wake of Saturday’s goalless draw with relegation-threatened Lewes.

The Dorchester Town boss believes his men must be more vocal in order to assist one another on the pitch.

And the 39-year-old felt the familiar sound of silence hindered the Magpies’ attempts to gain a vital victory in the fight for Blue Square Bet South survival.

He said: “I need leaders out there who will give information to each other and help each other all the time.

“At times it was too quiet out there, which should never happen. We should be organising all the time and for me that’s as big a part of the game as doing things with your feet.

“I want a spine of leaders who are vocal and do a job. We’re a work in progress and we’re not far away.

“With certain players it depends what head they turn up with. I haven’t got time for people who don’t turn up with the right head.”

Reflecting more on Saturday’s stalemate, in which Gary Bowles was denied by the post, Vickers added: “It was very scrappy and a very important game for us – we were under no illusions about that.

“But Lewes are by no means the worst team we have played this year and they’ve had a lot of changes in personnel with bags of experience in their team.

“We wanted the win and we felt our fitness would really tell but again we had a lot of chances and failed to take them.

“It leaves you flat as we had the opportunity to put relegation fears to bed and move on.

“But I bore myself saying how we had this many chances. We huffed and puffed and that’s the best way to describe it.

“I have great expectations for those lads and when you create chances but don’t take them it’s frustrating. The lads feel the same.“ One day we’ll give someone a good hiding but we might have to wait until next season and just grind it out for now.”

The county town chief did though reserve some praise for substitute Jamie Symes, full-back Neil Martin and Kyle Critchell’s shaven hairstyle.

Vickers, who sports the same look, albeit without volition, said: “Jamie is an intelligent player. He was up against Jermaine Wright who has Premier League experience with Ipswich but Jamie was excellent.

“Neil was also excellent. As for Kyle, I want all the players to have that kind of haircut. I’m happy with it as it brought a good performance out of him.”

Dorchester’s next assignment is tomorrow’s Dorset Senior Cup final against rivals Weymouth at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
