Les Hallett Trophy final

WEYLINE 5

SNOOKES 0

A VIRTUOSO display by red-hot Danny Andrews was enough to lead 10-man Weyline to the Les Hallett Trophy.

The star man bagged four goals as his side inflicted a 5-0 drubbing on Snookes at Portland United’s Grove Corner headquarters.

Weyline enjoyed the best possible start when they took the lead after just 45 seconds.

Upwey & Broadwey ace Ethan Devaney teed up Andrews and he made no mistake from 18 yards in beating Snookes’ keeper Mark Cottingham.

Weyline’s continued pressure paid off on the half-hour when a deep cross from full-back James Aldom found Andrews 12 yards out and he sneaked a header inside Cottingham’s near post.

Tempers were beginning to flare though and soon after Weyline were a man down.

A clash between Snookes’ John Wilshere and Weyline skipper Sean Stewart resulted in referee Phil Watson issuing a yellow to the former and a red to the latter for an apparent head-butt.

Snookes came out for the second half desperate to make their most of their numerical advantage, but they found themsleves three goals adrift just five minutes in.

Craig Wells received a pass from Devaney and drilled under Cottingham to make it 3-0.

And the tie was effectively over when Weyline added two more in the space of a minute.

First, Andrews completed his hat-trick with a stunning half-volley before the same man jinked into the opposing box and delivered a delicate chip over the advancing gloveman.

Weyline assistant-manager Rob Pavey said: “We’ve been in great form the last two months and it’s culminated in a clinical performance against a very experienced Snookes team.

“The early goal obviously gave our boys a lift and although we lost Sean somewhat controversially just before half-time, we dealt with that blow superbly.

“Some of our attacking was a pleasure to watch and this win gives us a nice platform to mount a title challenge next season.”

On the subject of man-of- the-match Andrews, Pavey added: “He was untouchable and to have such a clinical striker always gives you a chance.”

Cottingham, who is also the Weymouth Sunday League’s chairman, said: “Danny Andrews was awesome on the day and there was no doubt that he and Ethan Devaney were the difference between the sides.

“Although we lost, the whole day was a great success. We raised £400 for charity and Portland United FC got a great response over the bar from all those that turned out and supported the teams involved.”
