BRIDPORT could yet gain promotion after news emerged that Oldland Abbotonians have failed to meet the sufficient ground standards.

The Bees’ 2-2 draw against runaway champions Merthyr Town last Saturday looked to have ended any slim hopes they had of being elevated from Toolstation Western League Division One.

However, speculation had been mounting that second-placed Oldland’s Aitchison Playing Field headquarters had not passed the grading criteria.

And in a dramatic development, Western League secretary Ken Clarke revealed that the Bristol outfit’s eligibility for promotion is being assessed, with a verdict expected to be reached in the near future.

Through a statement, Clarke said: “No decision will be made until after the season ends and we will advise clubs and media as soon as possible.

“There are several issues still to be resolved and the league’s directors have been tracking all possible outcomes in recent weeks.

“Currently, the facilities at Oldland Abbotonians do not meet grading standards required for the Premier Division and the club are aware of this.

“The constitution for next season must be agreed by the directors before publication.”

Manager Trevor Senior believes Bridport would relish a return to the Western League’s top-flight following a six-year exile in Division One.

But he has urged the relevant officials to make a swift decision so that he can commence his preparation for the 2011/12 campaign.

Senior said: “Our ground is up to standard and our playing surface is the best in the division. The whole club is geared up for the Premier Division.

“The lads are desperate to test themselves at a higher level. They have been texting me to find out what is going on and are excited about possibly playing in the Premier Division.

“I just hope that the decision is made either way as soon as possible, because I want to start planning for next season. It might give me more pulling power if we are a Premier Division club.”

Chairman Adrian Scadding confirmed the club would appeal if the outcome of Oldland’s promotion does not go in favour of Bridport.

He said: “It clearly states in the rules that everything should be in place by March 31. That time has gone for Oldland to get their ground ready so, being the next club in line, we should be invited up to the Premier Division.

“The league might see it differently and decide to relegate just one team, but if Oldland are granted promotion we will definitely appeal.”
