MARTYN Rogers hopes to lead the Terras into the Zamaretto Premier Division top eight next season – without breaking the bank.

Ex-chairman George Rolls stated at Tuesday night’s fans’ forum that the Terras’ boss would have to work “to our financial constraints” and build a team accordingly.

Having spoken to Rolls, the Bristolian, who guided Weymouth to safety 10 days ago, is confident he can meet those requirements and mould a competitive squad at the same time.

He said: “We have had a conversation, things are still ongoing but we will get there. I need to discuss a few things but we have had some discussions already and I don’t think there will be any major problems.

“I want a side that is competitive, as I want to be in the top eight of the league next season. To do that you do need a decent side.

“We finished the season with a half-decent side so if we want to improve everyone needs to work hard to get more money into the place.

“As a manager you always want a big budget so that you can get the better players, but some- times you have to look at it from the club’s point of view – you can’t spend money the club doesn’t have.

“Money doesn’t grow on trees so we have to make sure we pay within our means.

“There is a lot of hard work to be done at the club but if everyone is pulling in the same direction we will get the club back to where it should be.”

Rogers added: “We beat Salisbury, Stourbridge and Chesham, and we ran Hednes-ford and Truro very close, so we’ve shown we can compete with the better sides. We just need to do it consistently.

“You do need a winning mentality and I would like to think I can get a side together that the fans will be proud of, and go to the Bob Lucas Stadium thinking they have a good chance of winning.”

Rogers also confirmed that he has agreed a pre-season friendly with Npower League One outfit Yeovil Town. The date is still to be confirmed.
