JULIEN Lawes regained his men’s singles crown with a ruthless display of power and control against Kieron Morrissey on the final day of the Weymouth Town Tennis Tournament.

Morrissey had breezed into the final and many onlookers fancied him to test Lawes in the final showdown but the latter got out of the blocks far quicker, breaking the youngster’s serve in a tight first game and immediately consolidating by holding his own with ease.

Morrissey had reached the finale by pummelling opponents with his forehand attack but somehow found himself 5-0 down in no time as Lawes’ defence repeatedly neutralised his strengths and turned rallies around.

The teenager finally grabbed a break of serve to steady his nerves for the second set, in which he applied himself far better.

Both players held serve until 3-3 in a second set featuring some brilliant play from both players, but it was Lawes who forced the decisive break in the crucial marathon seventh game, Morrissey finally cracking under relentless pressure and being forced to hit an all or nothing forehand that bounced agonisingly past the line.

Lawes then used all his experience to serve out the match and reclaim the Weymouth title.

There was no respite for either player as they opposed each other in the men’s doubles final, Morrissey gaining some revenge and rounding off a fantastic tournament by partnering Chris Westhead to victory in three sets over Lawes and Isaac Verkaik.

The ladies’ doubles winners were Bridport duo Caroline Cash and Amy Nicholson who beat Joy Hennessy and Rhose Lawes in straight sets, while Mark Henman and Hennessy took the mixed title with a similar win over Rhose Lawes and Clif Moreton.

George Morrissey, youn-ger brother of Kieron, beat Tom Powell in a set play-off to win the under-16 title.
