BRENDON King was left completely dumbfounded by his side’s slack defending at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday.

The Weymouth boss watched on in disbelief as basic errors and poor marking contributed to more dropped points in a 2-2 draw against a very average Evesham United outfit that would have snatched victory had it not been for home keeper Nick Jordan.

New signing Mark Peters was drafted into a new-look backline as the Terras adopted a 3-5-2 formation in a bid to shore up their leaky defence and give playmaker Rob Wolleaston the freedom to create openings at the other end.

However, the ex-Chelsea man was forced to pull out of the game through illness at the last minute and his extra quality was undoubtedly missed despite a penalty from Warren Byerley and a header from Richard Marshallsay handing the hosts a 2-1 half-time lead.

Speaking after the game, King said: “Rob has had sickness and diarrhoea but he travelled down to give it a go and unfortunately he was forced to pull out in the warm-up.

“With the new formation that was a big blow and with Ollie Tribe having a late fitness test on his ankle and Nick Jordan picking up a thigh strain in the warm-up it was not ideal preparation but we cannot use those things as an excuse as we should have acquitted ourselves a lot better.”

The Terras have now conceded 15 goals in seven games and currently sit fourth-bottom in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.

However, despite another abject display at the back, King was satisfied with his latest addition and is adamant he can help turn around Weymouth’s fortunes. He added: “That was Mark’s first competitive game for a while and he did okay.

“We know he is not the quickest but he reads the game well and is an organiser, and hopefully more will come from him.”
