SHAFTESBURY 3 WEYMOUTH RES 1

DESPITE shipping three goals in a first-half horror show, Jake Richmond was left puzzled as to how his Terras failed to complete a remarkable comeback.

Wayne Matthews’ first-half treble put Shaftesbury in complete control in Saturday’s Magna Dorset Premier League Cup first round clash.

Some harsh words at the interval spurred Weymouth Reserves into action and despite creating a dozen clear-cut opportunities, a single strike from Shane Sheridan was all they had to show for their renewed efforts – much to the amazement of their co-boss.

Richmond said: “We started off very well, we were keeping it on the deck and we looked very good. Then we got caught by a long ball over the top and they made it 1-0.

“It became a bit scrappy after that as we decided we didn’t want to keep the ball.

“Then in the 40th minute they scored a goal that was almost a replica of the first. We didn’t recover from that and another long punt saw their lad race through again for 3-0.

“I was going to have a go at the lads at half-time but I thought I’d give them a couple of minutes to chat among themselves and they really got into each other.

“I care more about performances than results and our first-half performance was totally unacceptable.

“I would give their first-half performance two out of 10 but in the second half they were 10 out of 10. We had 12 clear-cut chances, of which Shane had six and scored one, and we completely battered them.

“I have never seen such a one-sided half and I haven’t got a clue as to how we lost as we had enough chances to win two or three games.”
