WEYMOUTH 8 BRIDPORT 3

WEYMOUTH staged two superb comebacks to overcome Bridport at Monmouth Avenue.

Two first-half tries saw the visitors take command of the first game before their opponents came roaring back to win 3-2.

James Dobson halved the deficit with an elusive run to the corner before Frankie Read’s double decided matters in the closing stages.

Keen to gain revenge, Bridport came out in the following match and once again took an early lead.

But Weymouth were now full of confidence and soon responded to go 6-2 up before the interval.

Bridport were still battling though and they reduced the lead again before two further touchdowns from the home side finally sealed their fate.

Tyler Baker, Dobson and Read all grabbed braces for Weymouth with Harry Bell and Robert Hunter scoring one apiece.

A Weymouth spokesman said: “Although there were some fantastic tries, the coaches were really pleased with the team’s attitude and noted their improvements in tackling and passing out of contact.

“This allowed them to keep the Bridport defence largely on the back foot and control the play for long periods.

“The best effort award went to Rafe Owen, who belied his smaller stature in bringing down much larger opponents and was responsible for a number of significant offloads allowing the Weymouth attacks to continue.”
