SENSEI Jason Bird is urging people to try something new this year and sample the Tanren Dojo on Portland.
The island venue, at the back of the Brackenbury Centre, offers traditional Aikido to both children and adults as well as Iaido (Japanese Swordsmanship) for those aged 18 and over.
Sensei Bird said: “Classes are disciplined, formal yet friendly, but most importantly committed and effective.
“Aikido is made up of Taijutsu (empty handed techniques) and Bukiwaza (weapons, sword and Jo, 4ft staff) while Iaido is the art of Japanese swordsmanship where students start with a wooden training sword then progress onto live bladed swords (Shinken).
“The classes help with fitness, flexibility and core strength.”
Having been left empty for many years, the Dojo has undergone a series of renovations.
The mat space and main training room is also open for hire for only £5 per hour during daytimes for activities such as yoga, pilates and Tai Chi.
Changing rooms have been added and natural teas, coffees, water and sports drinks are all available.
Wessex Karate Academy hold classes at the Dojo every Sunday evening from 6pm.
