Chickerell UTD RES 1 WEYMOUTH SPORTS 1

WEYMOUTH Sports’ inconsistency reared its ugly head once more as they stuttered to a 1-1 draw at Chickerell United Reserves.

Having defeated title-chasing Upwey & Broadwey for the second time this season in their previous outing, hopes were high of successive Dorset Senior League victories.

However, in the end Sports had to rely on an own goal at the Stalls to salvage a share of the spoils, after Liam Coles had put the Chickens in front.

Joint-manager Chris Hicks said: “The tale of our season has been that we are able to do well against the teams above us, but struggle against those below us. Saturday epitomised our consistency.

“It was a terrible game to be honest, played on a terrible pitch that we didn’t adapt to.

“It wasn’t the prettiest game to watch, or play in, and we were awful in the first half. There was no quality on the ball and less effort put in.

“The only highlight for us was an Andy Cleal header that was cleared off the line. Had we been more alert we could then have had an easy tap-in.

“We were 1-0 down at half-time but it could have been two as their striker missed a howler.

“We put in a bit more effort in the second half but the quality was still woeful and we couldn’t string more than two or three passes together.

“Fortunately we did manage to get an equaliser and it came when Robbie Rolls’ free-kick ricocheted in off one of their lads for an own goal.

“After that it was a bit of a struggle again and although we should have had one or two penalties, it would have been harsh on Chickerell as 1-1 was a fair result.”
