CHLOE Wakely claimed gold in the Badminton England Under-15s singles tournament at the Westgate Centre in Winchester.

The competition attracted a huge entry of over 35 girls from counties all over the country, but the 13-year-old Weymouth ace showed no signs of nerves with convincing wins in the early rounds over entrants placed higher than her in the national rankings.

Progressing to the semi-finals without dropping a game, Wakely then came up against number one seed Amy Polgase from Cornwall.

It was a very close-fought match with long and tactical rallies throughout but in the end the Dorset competitor’s strength and hard hitting won through, enabling her to go on to the final where she secured the title of under-15 girls’ singles champion with a convincing victory.

A county squad and Bournemouth Performance Centre spokesman said: “All the hard work and dedication to training is really paying off for Chloe, who is having a great end to the tournament season.

“She also recently won the Somerset under-15 singles title and came third in the Cornwall under-15 singles.”
