WEYLINE 3 Rodwell 1

WEYLINE are now just one step away from securing a historic treble after seeing off Rodwell in the Dorset Sunday Intermediate Cup final.

The Weymouth Sunday League Premiership champions beat their top-flight rivals 3-1 and will now look to complete a clean sweep of trophies by attempting to beat Duke of Albany in this weekend’s Len Mahoney Cup final.

With the Bob Lucas Stadium having survived an early morning pitch inspection, Weyline flew out of the blocks against Rodwell and went one up after just five minutes when good wing play from Lee Pattison found Ethan Devaney, who buried his shot beyond the hapless Rob Ritchie.

The wet conditions made life difficult for both sides and after saving a header from Lee Thomspon, Ritchie very nearly handed Adam Parker’s side a second when his sliced clearance rebounded off his own post, much to the relief of his team-mates.

Pattison then went close for Weyline before their top-scorer Danny Andrews was forced off due to a stomach bug, bringing Liam Miles into the fray.

To their credit, Rodwell were digging in and just after the break they were rewarded with a controversial penalty after James Aldom was adjudged to have fouled Sean Zima.

The Weyline right-back was convinced that the first point of contact had occurred outside the box but his appeals were waved away allowing Josh Burton to power the resulting spot-kick past James Parkes, who got a hand to the effort but couldn’t keep it out.

Suddenly, the Boot Hill outfit were beginning to get on top but after Chris Wyatt had failed to give them the lead with a free header at the far post, Devaney fired in his second from a tight angle against the run of play on 75 minutes after being teed up by skipper Adam Schofield.

The Rodwell were now forced to commit more men forward in a desperate bid for an equaliser but their hopes were dashed when Weyline caught them out with a classic counterattack to put the game to bed.

Ben Mackie broke down the right and when his attempted shot flew across the face of goal there was Sean Stewart to slide the ball home at the far post.

The Len Mahoney Cup final takes place at Grove Corner at 1.30pm on Sunday following the Les Hallett Trophy final between Portland Town Lions and Brit-annia, which takes place at the same venue at 10.30am.
