WEYMOUTH Amateur Boxing Club toasted four victories at their latest dinner-boxing show at Weymouth Pavilion.

Seasiders John Corson, Jordan Croad, Dan Hearnshaw and Anthony Randall all tasted success on an action-packed evening in the Ocean Room.

Getting the competitive bouts underway, Chloe Le Page, 14, made her debut against Bria Fielding of Roche ABC.

The home boxer put up a brave fight but it was perhaps no surprise to see her more experienced rival, who had travelled more than five hours from Burnley, come out on top.

Next to enter the ring was another debutant – 12-year-old Leon Fowler.

He went toe-to-toe with Mitchell Taylor of Poole, with both youngsters catching one another in the early exchanges.

Taylor then began to pick off Fowler as he pushed forward in the second and despite a valiant effort from the Weymouth youngster in the final round, it was the East Dorset fighter who prevailed by a majority decision – 10-6, 13-7, 16-18.

Weymouth’s first victory arrived courtesy of Corson as he squared off against Kai Brammer (Mayflower).

The opening round was somewhat scrappy before Corson began to box behind a solid jab in the second.

The home member continued to improve as the contest progressed and he ran out a deserved winner, 18-4, 15-6, 15-10.

Fellow 13-year-old Jack Barlow was next on the bill, taking on Gloucester’s Brad Ingram.

The latter went straight on the attack but Barlow countered superbly before the second round saw solid shots from both competitors.

It all came down to the third and final round and although Barlow appeared to hold the upper hand, it was Ingram who had his hand raised courtesy of a 14-12, 11-7, 10-16 verdict.

Another surprise outcome saw club-mate Fabian Peterkin lose out to Kai Avery (Barnstaple).

Peterkin, 14, was firing on all cylinders early on, landing lefts and rights to the head and then keeping his opponent on the back foot in round two.

Both boxers gave their all in the last but it was still a shock to see Avery declared the winner on a majority decision – 14-10, 11-5, 8-11.

There was better luck for Croad in his bout with Portland’s Tom Jarvis.

The older and more experienced islander came out on top in the last meeting between the two and Croad was out for revenge.

Jarvis pushed forward throughout the contest but Croad, 15, boxed beautifully behind the jab and gained a 12-8, 14-10, 16-6 triumph.

In the senior bouts, Rob Parker faced Maxwell Manston of Blandford.

The 18-year-old displayed good footwork and a tight guard in the opening round but Manston still managed to find a way through.

The two then traded blows in the next two rounds before the Blandford boxer triumphed 7-5, 10-9, 12-7.

Hearnshaw then entered the ring for his first outing in Weymouth colours, taking on Poole’s James Pearson.

The 26-year-old unloaded heavy shots from the off, forcing his rival onto the ropes.

Hearnshaw remained on top as the bout progressed and predictably finished the stronger of the two to earn a unanimous win – 22-11, 19-6, 17-12.

Last but not least, the final member of the Weymouth contingent was Randall, 24.

He was paired with Jack Chatham of Bridport and the two went back and forth in the opening round.

The close nature of the contest continued into the last two rounds with the crowd on its feet.

And after a thrilling bout it was Randall who gained the judges’ app-roval, carding a 24-21, 24-15, 19-10 success in his first match-up for two-and-a-half years.

Prior to the competitive drama, 12-year-olds Joseph Henson and Kyle Baldwin took part in their own skills bouts.

The former was up against Zak Jones of Tiverton and both youngsters carried into the ring what they had been taught in the gym, displaying tight guards and useful combinations.

Baldwin entered the ring for the first time but performed admirably against Copnor Boys’ Cameron Taylor.

Club president David Nelmes said: “Credit must to go the coaches, matchmaker Chris Simpson, the supporters and sponsors for putting on a very good show.

“Already we have had more bouts than last season and we have also been invited to Guernsey for an open-air show. Our next show at Weymouth will be in November.”
