OUTGOING boss Stuart Heath has urged his Blues to put as much pressure as possible on the chasing pack ahead of their final outing of the season.

Portland United bring the curtain down on a much-improved campaign with tomorrow’s visit of Bridport Reserves (3pm).

And despite sitting top of the pile, the islanders are considered the least likely side to lift the Magna Dorset Premier League trophy because reigning champions Hamworthy Recreation and third-placed Westland Sports both hold games in hand.

Therefore Heath, who announced his resignation last weekend, is keen to see his men record their 27th win from 36 league games.

He said: “We have got an important game and we need to focus on that as we are still in a good position. We have got to make sure we try and win it.

“Whatever happens after that is up to the teams around us. All we can do is put a little bit of pressure on them by winning.

“We have 83 points so far and that is a good return, no matter who you are. It’s likely that it won’t be enough to win the league but it’s still a good achievement nonetheless.

“We have not always played as well at home as we have away but tomorrow we can show the supporters we are where we are on merit.

“We want to go into the summer break with a win under our belt and a good points tally. If someone finishes above us then they deserve to win it.”

Further reflecting on his decision to step down as island chief, Heath added: “It’s a decision I have not taken lightly but it seems the right one.

“I’m still working as hard as I can to get the players prepared for this last game. We’ll have to see what happens after that.”

The Bees meanwhile, will be out to avoid back-to-back derby defeats having lost at home to Chickerell United in their previous outing.

Joint-boss Steve Crabb, who saw Tuesday’s home clash with Swanage Town & Herston postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, said: “Portland are a quality side but we will go there and do our best.

“It’s our last away game of the season so hopefully we will give a good account of ourselves.”

Chickerell and Holt United go head-to-head tomorrow in the battle for a top-five finish (3pm).

The latter currently occupy fifth spot but victory for the Chickens at Gaunts Common would see them close to within one point of their rivals.

Boss Maurice Welch, whose side end the season at Tintinhull on Monday afternoon, said: “If we beat Holt there is every chance we could finish fifth.

“They are four points clear at the moment but they have still got to play Hamworthy Rec and Westland Sports.

“Sixth place isn’t guaranteed yet but we would like to finish fifth so we will aim for that and try and win our last two games.

“Tuesday night’s draw with Westland was a big lift for the lads.

“If we had been beaten by five or six it would have been all doom and gloom but all the lads are keen to go again tomorrow.

“As far as I know, the 11 that started on Tuesday are all available again and we should also have a few more coming back.”

Weymouth Reserves complete their Magna Dorset Premier League campaign tomorrow with a home clash against Blandford United (3pm).

The Terras won 2-0 against Parley Sports last time out and currently sit 12th in the table.

Joint-boss Jake Richmond, who will have Adam Skelton back in his squad, said: “It would be nice to finish on a high and with three more points.

“We lost 3-2 against them earlier in the season after one of our worst first-half displays of the season so the lads owe it to themselves to put that right.

“It would also be nice to see quite a few come down and watch the youngsters coming through.”
