MARTIN Oliver starred with both bat and ball to lead Cattistock into the quarter-finals of the Dorchester Evening League Knockout Cup.

The all-rounder top scored with 39 as his side closed on 148-7 before returning impressive figures of 3-17 to help restrict Abbotsbury to 114-7 in reply.

The victors will now face either Churches United or Plush in the last eight of the competition.

In Division One, reigning champions Dewlish look destined to surrender their crown this summer after falling to their second defeat of the season.

Dave Griffiths (47) led the way as St George’s – five-time winners between 2006 and 2010 – posted 153-7, despite the superb efforts of Simon Ross (5-25).

Tom Hewish plundered 45 in reply but Dewlish (140-8) fell agonisingly short of their target.

The Saints are currently second in the table, but having played fewer games than leaders Martinstown.

The table-toppers’ latest outing saw them ease to victory in a brief encounter with Hazelbury Bryan.

Chris Read (5-11) helped himself to a fifer as the latter were skittled for a meagre 33. Martinstown (36-0) then breezed home with all 10 wickets in hand.

Puddletown (148-7) inflicted a first defeat of the Division Two campaign on Bere Regis (147-3), in spite of an excellent all-round display from the latter’s Dean Rogerson, who hit an unbeaten 51 before snaring 2-13.

Also in the second tier, Abbotsbury (105-5) bagged their maiden victory of the summer with a five-wicket success against Martinstown Seconds (102-6), in which Simon Pengelly hit 35 runs and Dave Backhouse claimed figures of 2-18, while Frampton (95-2) got the better of Charlton Down (94-9).

Kieron Womble smashed 63 runs to help maintain Churches United’s perfect start in Division Three.

The league leaders (154-3) were certainly run close, with opponents Colliton Club (144-6) losing by just 10 runs.

Second-placed Plush also boast a 100 per cent record, but having played one game less, after overcoming Charlton Down Seconds and Puddletown RFC.

Tom Atkinson stole the show in the first contest with an unbeaten 64 while team-mate Matt Chalmers (3-24) also impressed with three wickets.

Tim Mitchell managed to surpass Atkinson’s efforts in the clash with the rugby boys, top scoring with 88 not out.

Elsewhere, Charlton Down Seconds (148-5) recovered from their defeat to Plush by beating Puddletown Reserves (102) in a match where Nick Roe fired 70 for the victors.
