WINTON 157 (4pts) lost to WEYMOUTH 161-3 (20pts) by seven wickets

STAND-IN wicketkeeper Kieron Womble produced a wonderful performance behind the stumps as Weymouth claimed a maximum haul at Winton in the Dorset Premier Division.

With Jim Ryall unavailable, the youngster was thrown the gloves and he rose to the challenge by producing four stumpings, all of which came off med- ium pacers, as the Seasiders knocked the hosts over for just 157.

Womble (18 not out) and the returning Tom England (33 not out) then led Weymouth past the finishing post with a fourth-wicket stand of 57 after Hayden White (46) and Paul Payne (38) had piled on the runs at the top of the reply.

The convincing victory was more than enough to hand the visitors the full 20 points and skipper Dean Janaway was delighted with the all-round performance.

He told Echosport: “There was a bit of a hold up at the start so the match didn’t begin until 2pm, which meant it had to be reduced to 46 overs per side.

“They won the toss and opted to bat but we bowled very well and pinned them down for a long time.

“In fact, they didn’t really play a shot in anger until much later in the innings and in the end we got them out for 157.

“On another day we would have probably got them even cheaper than that but Hayden got us off to a flier with the bat and eventually we knocked them off comfortably in just 27.4 overs.

“It was just another fine team performance and this time we got our rewards.

“The bowlers did well, there was great effort in the field and we batted sensibly in reply.

“I was particularly delighted for Kieron who stepped in behind the stumps and did a fantastic job.

“He had four stumpings and once again put on a great all-round display.”

Winton immediately found runs hard to come by as the likes of Dave Trotter (0-21 off 10 overs), Matt Lawes (0-27 off nine overs), Laurie ‘Cube’ Whyte (3-35 off nine overs) and Dan Hutchens (2-24 off nine overs) bowled extremely tight lines, giving the batsmen very little room to manoeuvre.

Opener Michael Clark (42) put up dogged resistance and Harry Seal (22) attempted to be a bit more expansive in the middle order but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals with Simon Browne (3-34) also producing a great spell in the later stages.

After tea, Janaway’s (8) disappointing early season form with the bat continued when he was clean bowled by Alistair Williams (1-34) but White had no such problems as he racked up 46 in just 43 balls alongside Payne, who smashed six boundaries on his way to 38, which included two sixes.

That barrage led to a second-wicket stand of 69 before both men fell to leg before decisions off the bowling of Lee Garrett (2-26).

However, the damage had already been done and it was left to Womble and England to knock off the rest of the runs with consummate ease as Weymouth celebrated a resounding victory.
