FERN Grimshaw overcame atrocious conditions to collect her first WPGA One-Day Series victory of the year at Chestfield Golf Club in Kent.

The Wessex Golf Centre professional remained calm in the adverse weather to take the honours to remain hot on the heels of Laura Hendrikson as she bids to top the WPGA Order of Merit for a second successive year.

Devon-based Hendrikson won the opening two events and is looking in fine form but Grimshaw is hopeful she can push her all the way.

Commenting on her WPGA Order of Merit ambitions, the Weymouth ace said: “I’m challenging earlier than I was last year.

“Laura missed out this time but she’s such a good player that I know she’ll do well in the remaining events.”

Grimshaw carded a two over par round of 73 at Chestfield which saw her triumph by four shots ahead of Sarah Carty from Ireland’s Black Bush Golf Club.

She added: “It was shocking out there and the wind was terrible.

“However, there was never any suggestion the event was going to get called off so we had to get on with it.

“I bogeyed the first two holes and we had to wait to make putts because the ball was shaking in the wind.

“It was then that I took the view that there was no point in getting angry and instead just started laughing about it really.

“I tried my best to enjoy it out there and use it as good experience.

“It worked for me although I was expecting someone to come in with a better score.”

Grimshaw also had a word of praise for the Chestfield club. She said: “They looked after us really well on the day, we’re always made to feel welcome there.”
