MORE than 100 drivers will descend on Clay Pigeon Raceway this Sunday, bidding to follow in the footsteps of Formula One star Jenson Button.

The expanding Elite Karting League is moving to the Dorchester -based circuit, where 2009 F1 world champion Button began his motorsport career, and this weekend is the third event of the 2012 series.

The series, in its debut year, is a completely new concept in the UK and is bringing together a wide variety of talented karters who are all hoping to become national team champions.

Bournemouth-based Matchams Machines won the first round but missed round two so will be looking to make amends on Sunday.

Kat Pope, Elite Karting League co-ordinator, said: “We’re really looking forward to our event at Clay Pigeon.

“The track is one of the best in the country and I know we’ll see some fantastic racing there.

“We’ve got five more teams joining us and it’s great to see so many newcomers to karting having a good time out on track.

“I’m proud of how well the teams are doing and that we seem to have got the formula right. Jenson’s racing in F1 but our drivers are paying less to have a day of great racing at the track where he started than for a ticket to watch him race.”

It’s not too late to take part in the series. Anyone wanting to have a go can find out more by visiting facebook.com/thekartingleague
