CHRIS Wilson has played down the importance of tomorrow’s top-of-the-table clash in the Magna Dorset Premier League (3pm).

Second-placed Portland United welcome leaders Holt United to Grove Corner in the former’s first home match of the new season.

Both sides remain undefeated but island chief Wilson insists tomorrow’s outcome will have no bearing on the destiny of the title.

He said: “I don’t think we can look at it that way. It’s just another match and nothing will be decided this weekend.

“We will go into it prepared and fully aware of what a good side they are.”

The Blues made it five wins from five at the weekend with a 2-1 victory at lowly Cranborne.

However, missed chances almost cost the visitors at the Mick Loader Recreation Ground.

Wilson added: “The lads know they did enough to win the game on Saturday but they also know we can’t go on creating that many chances without tucking them away, otherwise it will backfire against better opposition – and that is no disrespect to Cranborne.

“We have Holt tomorrow and they have started the season well. They are always a tough side to come up against and they will create chances.”

Chickerell United will be looking to tighten up in defence as they go in search of a positive result at perennial title challengers Hamworthy Recreation (3pm).

Boss Maurice Welch said: “We are leaking bad goals at the moment.

“We have had problems in the sense of having to change the back four all the time. You need a settled backline and it has shown in the goals we have conceded.

“The lads haven’t been letting themselves down though, we are just being punished for little things.

“Hopefully we will put it right tomorrow. It’ll be another tough one for us though, as Hamworthy are a good side.

“They have had some indifferent results this season but they have scored 20 goals in two games against Tintinhull and Sher-borne.”

The Chickens are expected to be without the injured Janek Tarnawski (ankle) but hope to see Liam Beades return to full fitness.

Bridport Reserves, who shared a 2-2 draw with Chickerell in midweek, travel to Tintinhull tomorrow with revenge at the forefront of their minds (3pm).

Manager Robin Townsend said: “The reserves lost 6-2 at Tintinhull last season and given that 90 per cent of the squad remains the same I’m sure we’ll be looking for a bit of revenge.”

Goalkeeper Jamie Fry is unavailable for tomorrow’s trip.

Weymouth Reserves are also on the road at Blandford United (3pm) and joint-boss Jake Richmond is hoping lessons have been learnt from last Saturday’s 3-1 defeat against Poole Borough.

He said: “The lads need to learn that at this standard of football you cannot afford to turn up and just start when you want to. You have to be at it from the first whistle otherwise you can find yourselves behind very quickly.

“We also need to start converting a few more of our chances. We made 13 against Poole and took one while they made three and took three.”

Goalkeeper Chris Povall is unavailable this weekend which means Jamie Perry will go with the first-team squad.

Richmond added: “With Chris away and Jamie with the firsts, we have got a lad called Sebastian coming in to help us out. Other than that we should pretty much have the same squad as last week.”
