WEYMOUTH windsurfers flourished at the UK Windsurfing Association National Slalom Series event in Worthing.

Sam Anstey, Kevin Greenslade, Scotty Stallman and Tom Wells were four of the 45 surfers competing across three fleets.

In the amateur fleet, Anstey and Stallman, who are windsurfers from the Official Test Centre, faced some of the toughest conditions of the series so far.

As the wind increased on the first day, the seas became choppy and the swell caught out many sailors at the gybe marks.

Competition was fierce from the start and the level of sailing very high.

Stallman adapted to the conditions on day one and, after discards, took a fifth, seventh and a first.

Day two saw even higher winds and rougher seas, with conditions initially resembling more of a wave competition than a slalom event.

It was noted that fewer competitors took part in the second day’s racing due to the severe elements.

Stallman competed in the one race that was held for the amateurs and he battled hard against the seas to finish third.

After the two days of racing, Stallman finished in fourth overall, just missing out on the podium – Anstey was 20th overall.

Both had great results given the conditions, but the experience gained in the very difficult conditions will no doubt make both stronger for the next rounds of the series.

In the professional fleet, Greenslade and Wells were battling against some very stiff competition.

Despite the conditions, Greenslade finished second while Wells placed fourth, one of his best overall positions since starting to compete in the fleet.

There are three rounds of the Slalom Series to go.

The next takes place at Hunstanton Sailing Club in Norfolk from June 27-28.

Stage six is set for Tenby on September 26-27, while the final event is to be hosted by Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy on October 24-25.

The Weymouth youngsters will no doubt want to impress on home waters in the autumn.
