A SECOND World Championship triumph in as many years has Nick Thompson’s confidence at an all-time high heading towards Rio 2016 and now he is looking to fine-tune his preparations on home soil this week – in the final major competition before the Olympic Games.

The  sailor won gold at the Laser World Championship in Riviera Nayarit earlier this year, retaining the title he won in Kingston, Ontario 12 months prior.

Despite Rio marking his Olympic debut, those results have Thompson as one of the hot favourites to win Laser gold.

And he will try to lay down another marker this week at the Sailing World Cup regatta at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, which is contested from today until Sunday.

The Olympics get underway in less than 60 days and Thompson claims he is ready to give a good account of himself in South America.

“It’s not long now until the kick-off of the Olympics but I'm feeling brilliant in preparation for it,” he said.

“We’ve spent a lot of time out in Rio as a team and covered a lot of bases so I don’t think there is a huge amount more to do in terms of that.

“Personally, I’m in a pretty good place – I just won the World Championships for the second time which has given me a massive confidence heading into Rio.

“I’m pretty similar to lot of the other sailors this week in Weymouth in that there are a few things I want to work on.

“Obviously it’s still nice to try and win the event but it’s not long until the Olympics, so trying to tick off those little final things is the priority. It would be nice to win on home waters though.”

With 25 gold medals, Team GB are the most successful nation when it comes to sailing at the Olympic Games, so it comes as no surprise that Thompson is aiming high.

And he claims that refusing to settle for anything other than the best is a trait seen through the British Sailing set-up.

“A gold medal would be a successful Olympics for me,” added Thompson. “I think everyone in the team would give you the same answer because we are there to do one thing and that is win.

“I’d be disappointed if I don’t do anything other than that but I know it will be a tough event. Rio is a challenging venue so it will be a tough regatta but that is the aim.”
