CHESIL Sailability achieved top results at recent Hansa National Championships.

Three days of racing were held at Carsington Water, Derbyshire, where the Chesil team fielded three boats. A total of almost 20 boats were spread across the four classes of Hansa Liberty, Hansa 303 Single Handed, Hansa 303 Double Handed and Hansa 2.3. The first day of racing dawned with grey skies and a strong wind which was thought to be over 25 knots.

It was a successful day on the water for the Chesil sailors who achieved first and second place in the 303 Double Handed class and second in the 2.3 class.

The second day brought heavy rain and extremely light winds which decreased to almost nothing. After a two-hour postponement on the water, the decision was made to abandon racing leaving the Weymouth sailors in their strong positions.

The final day provided the perfect conditions for racing with sunshine and an increasing wind, enabling three races to take place.

At the prize giving, Chesil Sailability were presented with a great haul of trophies. In the 303 Doubled Handed class, Hugh de Iongh and Tim Scarisbrick took the top position with David Ankers and Philip Hall finishing in third place.

Janet Whyte, a volunteer at Chesil Sailability was persuaded to borrow a Hansa 2.3 for the event. She put in a fantastic performance finishing in second place overall and was awarded the Endeavour Trophy.

She said: “I think I was awarded the trophy for keeping all of the race team amused with my antics at trying to sail the 2.3 after 35 years of not sitting in a dinghy!”
