WEYMOUTH Rowing Club hosted the first regatta in the newly-formed Jurassic League and finished in second place overall on Weymouth Beach.
Teignmouth beat Weymouth to win the individual regatta with a strong performance in their gig Templar, while Bridport are the current leaders of the Jurassic League as a whole.
Weymouth achieved some good results alongside their second-place finish and claimed first places in the men’s veterans, ladies’ veterans and super veteran races. The hosts also had a triumphant crew in the final mixed event, all won in their Tristan gig.
The Jurassic League is comprised of nine clubs – Bridport, Exmouth, Langstone, Lyme Regis, Poole, Sidmouth, Portland, Swanage and Weymouth.
A total of 19 gigs competed in the event, which was held amid clearing sea mist. Sea conditions were variable with windier spells making some heats challenging.
Racing began with the ladies’ A and B races seeing crews battle on a triangular course in Weymouth Bay.
The ladies’ C race, featuring all four Weymouth gigs, was preceded with a minute’s silence and oars up in respect to those that died in the Manchester terror attack.
Swanage is to hold the next Jurassic League regatta on Saturday, June 3.
