A SPECIAL cricket match in memory of ex-Portland Red Triangle captain Martin Hewson is being staged at Redlands tomorrow.

Staff at DEK Printing Machines in Weymouth, where Hewson held several positions before his death earlier this year at the age of just 41, have organised the event in honour of their former colleague.

Three teams made up of past and present DEK employees will play each other in 10-over games while the umpiring and scoring is in the hands of the Portland club.

The action gets under way at around 4.45pm and the money raised through raffles and donations will go to the Red Triangle youth team, which Hewson used to coach.

Trevor Warren, a close friend of Hewson’s who worked with him at DEK, is encouraging the public to turn up to enjoy some cricket and a friendly family atmosphere.

“DEK wanted to do something to remember Martin and when it was decided a cricket match would be the best way I was called in to get the ball rolling,” he said.

“Martin loved sport, cricket was his main love, and we’ve had enough people come forward to play three teams which was a nice surprise.

“We’re already expecting around 180 people to come and we would like to see more turn up, bring a picnic, and make an evening of it.”

If the weather is bad, play will be moved into the sports hall.
