SUNDAY cricket is set to return to Weymouth next summer, as club chairman John Ryan revealed to Echosport that the club are planning to field a team in the Dorset League.

Balti House player-manager and Seasiders’ cricketer Marco Nott, pictured, is prepared to captain the side, in which a number of younger players are set to be blooded.

“We are planning to put a Sunday league team in next year,” said Ryan, who is staying on as chairman after retiring from playing at Dean Park in Weymouth’s final league outing against Parley last summer.

“We will be looking to blood four or five youngsters in the side and hopefully they can do their stuff with no fear.”

The decision to enter a team in Sunday cricket came at the club’s AGM, where Saturday first-team skipper Kieron Womble, who steered the club to fourth spot in Dorset Premier One last term, confirmed he is staying on as captain.

Tom Steadman will replace Pete Gordon as captain of the second team, while the Seasiders are looking for a new secretary after David Trotter decided to stand down.

The club are actively searching for a replacement to fill the vacant position and are welcoming people to come forward.

“It’s a job for someone who might be interested in helping out a local club,” Ryan added.
